渡辺一城 / Kazuki Watanave

Photographer

1978年新潟県燕市生まれ。高校3年の時にヘルムート・ニュートンの写真集に衝撃を受け、写真家を志す。

1998年、東京工芸大学芸術学部写真学科に入学。大学1年の時に、(有)臼井農産の豚に出会い撮り始め、以後ライフワークとなる。大学4年の時に、フォトグラファーの廣崎節雄氏に師事。その後約6年に渡り、氏の建築撮影のアシスタント業務に携わる。2002年大学卒業。

2010年、写真家3人と共同写真事務所、4×5 SHI NO GOを設立。2013年、B GALLERY(新宿/BEAMS JAPAN)にて個展「豚」を開催、同作品の写真集「人」を出版（発行：4×5 SHI NO GO）。2014年、故郷の燕市産業史料館にて「豚」の凱旋個展を開催。2016年、燕市の伝統工芸である「鎚起銅器」の図録撮影を手掛け、同年9月、燕市産業史料館にて個展「鎚起銅器」を開催。2023年、「HARVEST」でLONDON PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDSのFINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY部門にてCATEGORY WINNER OF THE YEARを受賞。

現在、東京を拠点に広告、雑誌、ウェブ等の撮影をする一方で、自身の作品制作を同時進行で行っている。

座右の銘は「写真とは一期一会の写心なり」－大学恩師、細江英公教授からのメッセージ。

Kazuki Watanave was born in 1978 in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. When he was in his third year of high school, he was impressed by a photo book of Helmut Newton and decided to become a photographer.

In 1998, he entered Tokyo Polytechnic University, Faculty of Arts at the Department of Photography. When he was in his first year of university, he started taking pictures of pigs at Usui Nosan Co., Ltd., which became a life project. When he was in his fourth year of university, he began to study under photographer Setsuo Hirosaki. Following, he worked as an assistant for Hirosaki's architecture photography for about 6 years. Graduated from university in 2002.

In 2010, together with three other photographers, he founded the joint photo office “4x5 SHI NO GO”. In 2013, he held the solo exhibition “Buta” at B GALLERY (Shinjuku / BEAMS JAPAN) and published the corresponding photo book “Hito” (publisher: 4x5 SHI NO GO). In 2014, he held a solo exhibition of “Buta” at the Tsubame Industrial Materials Museum, located in his hometown. In 2016, he took photographs for the record of “Tsuiki Copperware”, which is a traditional craft of Tsubame City, and held the solo exhibition “Tsuiki Copperware” at the Tsubame Industrial Materials Museum in September of the same year. In 2023, "HARVEST” won CATEGORY WINNER OF THE YEAR in the FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY category of the LONDON PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS.

He is currently based in Tokyo, photographing for advertisement, magazines, and websites, while at the same time pursuing personal projects.

His motto is “Photography is a photographing heart of a once-in-a-lifetime chance” －inspired by the message from his university teacher Professor Eikoh Hosoe.

渡辺一城写真集「人」

大学一年の時から15年に渡り「豚」を撮り続けて完成させた渡辺一城のファースト写真集。写真集には養豚場や食肉センターでの記録と共に、作品のバックグラウンドになっている渡辺の家族の写真が収録されている。また、巻末には渡辺が撮影で長年お世話になった(有)臼井農産代表取締役の臼井欽一氏、高崎食肉センター元理事長の小櫻憲治氏の「豚と食肉」にまつわる話も収録。

Kazuki Watanave Photographs “Hito”

The first photo book of Kazuki Watanave, which was completed after shooting pigs for 15 years, from starting university. The photo book contains records from a pig farm and meat center, as well as photographs of Watanave's family, which shape the background of the work. At the end of the Photobook, there are stories about "Pig and Meat" by Mr. Kinichi Usui, President of Usui Nosan Co., Ltd., and Mr. Kenji Kozakura, former President of Takasaki Meat Center, the benefactors that Watanave has long been taken care for shooting pigs.
