鎚起銅器 | Tsuiki Copperware

本作は、新潟県燕市の伝統工芸「鎚起銅器」の図録撮影の依頼を受け、長年保存されてきた作品や道具、そして制作工程を記録したシリーズである。

私は故郷である燕市に生まれ育ちながら、鎚起銅器の伝統や美しさにこれまでほとんど触れてこなかった。

記憶にあるのは、小学生の頃の断片的な体験に過ぎない。

撮影のために玉川堂の工房へ入った時、その曖昧な記憶は目の前の光景によって一気に塗り替えられた。

無機質な一枚の銅板が職人の手によって叩き上げられ、まるで生き物のように形を変えていく。

使い込まれた道具の佇まい、制作の過程に宿る音と光。

そこには、長い時間の中で積み重ねられてきた行為の痕跡が静かに刻まれていた。

当たり前にそこにあったはずのものを、ようやく自分の目で捉え直すことができた気がしている。

This series was created in response to a commission to photograph the traditional craft of Tsuiki copperware in Tsubame, Niigata—documenting the works, the tools, and the process through which they are made.

Although I was born and raised in Tsubame, I had rarely encountered the tradition or beauty of Tsuiki Copperware.

What remained in my memory were only fragmented experiences from childhood.

When I stepped into the workshop of Gyokusendo for this project, those vague memories were instantly replaced by what unfolded before me.

A single, inert sheet of copper is hammered by the hands of a craftsman, gradually taking form as if it were a living being.

The presence of well-worn tools, the sound and light embedded in the making process.

Within them, traces of accumulated actions over a long span of time quietly revealed themselves.

What had always been there, taken for granted,

I feel I was finally able to see again with my own eyes.
